Das Seminar ist als Lektürekurs der Vorlesung zur „Allgemeinen Soziologie“ konzipiert, die Bourdieu im Studienjahr 1982-1983 am Collège de France hielt. Wir lassen uns hier entsprechend vom Meister selbst in seine zentralen Begrifflichkeiten von Habitus und Feld und seine Vorstellung von Soziologie einführen. Der gesprochene und zum Teil improvisierte Stil des Textes bietet dabei einen einfachen und leichtfüßigen Zugang zu Bourdieus Sozialtheorie, die in den Hauptwerken ungleich schwerfälliger zur Darstellung kommt. Darüber hinaus liefern die zahlreichen Exkurse und spontanen Einschübe eine Echtzeitaufnahme der Brillanz und Gelehrsamkeit eines der wichtigsten Vertreter des Fachs. Der Lektürekurs ist damit theoretische Einführung und lebendige Soziologiegeschichte zugleich.
