Contents, comment

Current societies are facing unprecedented demographic changes (an ageing population, low birth rates, changing family structures and migration) which affect both the structure of the society and the economy. In the light of these changes, social policy and particularly familiy policy should review and adapt existing instruments. Family policy is challenged to create the conditions for real freedom to choose the life and work conditions that people have reasons to value. Therefore work-life balance is a major request for family policy. The seminar aims to introduce into contemporary debates on the development of the family policy. It includes an analysis of the current political and "betriebliche" programs to support families' work-life balance as well as a review of the effects of challenges raised for society by changing family structures. Work-Life-Balance strategies will be reconsidered from the perspective of the Capabilities Approach. International examples will be taken into account.
