Grüne und Rote Gentechnologie, Asbest, Schweinegrippe, SARS, atomare Restrisiken, Klimaerwärmung und zuletzt EHEC-Gemüse sind prominente, mit hoher gesellschaftlicher Aufmerksamkeit bedachte Gegenstandsfelder moderner „Biowissenschaften“.
Noch vor einigen Jahrzehnten wären diese Phänomene im engen Feld von akademischen Disziplinen wie der Biologie, der Biomedizin, der Biochemie, Molekularbiologie, Biophysik verhandelt worden. Nunmehr genießen sie nicht nur interdisziplinäre Prominenz sondern es wird auch ihre gesamtgesellschaftliche Relevanz behauptet. Mehr noch: Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass all diese Phänomene mithilfe von wissensbasierten Instrumenten gesteuert, eingedämmt oder bewältigt werden können.
An dieser Behauptung setzt das Seminar „Regulierung des Lebens“ an. Unser Ziel ist es vor dem Hintergrund prominenter soziologischer und historischer Gesellschaftstheorien (Risiko- und Wissensgesellschaft; Gouvernementalität) zu diskutieren, warum wir in postmodernen Gesellschaften zusehends nach einem Wissen fragen, dass explizit und implizit auf die Regulierung aller Lebensprozesse abzielt.
