This course will look at the different sorts of motivation language learners may have and examine the interplay between motivation on the one hand and other relevant individual differences, especially personality, aptitude for language learning, learning styles and preferred learning strategies, learner attitudes and beliefs, anxiety and self esteem, on the other hand.
We will also look at how good language learners motivate themselves, examine the relationship between self-motivation and learner autonomy and consider how the teacher can favourably influence motivation, bearing in mind that each learner is an individual and what motivates one learner will not necessarily work for another.
This course should be taken after the Introduction to Second Language Acquisition course (recommendation).
