Augustinus ist die zentrale Gestalt der lateinischen Spätantike. Sein Einfluss auf die europäische Geistesgeschichte, besonders auf das lateinische Mittelalter, ist wohl nicht zu überschätzen. Kaum ein anderer Text erlaubt einen so guten Einblick in sein Denken wie die Confessiones, die zugleich Zeugnis des geistigen Umbruchs von der Antike zum Mittelalter sind. Das Seminar wird ausgewählte Passagen des Werkes behnadeln, die es erlauben, die geistige Entwicklung Augustinus' sowie seine literarische und philosophische Bedeutung nachzuvollziehen.
