The course will examine current issues relating to the assessment, manage¬ment and treatment of different types of offenders from a psychological perspective in the UK. An introduction into the role of forensic psychology within a maximum-security hospital will be provided. This will explore both general and specific issues related to working with dangerous mentally disordered and non disordered offenders currently in the United King¬dom. Issues relating to the assessment of mental disorder and offending behaviour and their relation¬ship will be raised throughout. The importance of assessment in understanding the function of offending, identifying treatment targets and measuring change will be high¬light¬ed along with difficulties associated. Some treatment models will be described and their appli¬cation to a variety of offences discussed. This will include the special hospital setting and criminal justice setting. Gender differences will be examined with particular attention to the manifestation of mental health problems in women who offend. Forensic cases will be used throughout to demonstrate the complexities associated with treating this population.

4 credit points will be awarded for active class participation and preparation of a report, as described below. For BSc Psychology module R, you may choose whether you wish to have your work marked ("benotete Einzelleistung") or not ("unbenotete Einzelleistung").
Assessment will be based on one small report of 2000 words of a risk assessment of a hypothetical client scenario which will be given to the students in advance.
Your task will be to make a recommendation as to which forensic assessment tool would be more suitable for the particular client and setting in your scenario. The details of the individual are provided in a brief case scenario. You are asked to describe the client, identify key issues, provide a brief background of the area, i.e. “research literature identifies the following areas as important in any assessment of x offenders”, and review it. You should then identify the tool you have chosen and state why you have selected it. You must then review research literature regarding this tool"
