281185 Modelling Complex Biophysical Processes (S) (WiSe 2006/2007)

Contents, comment

The modelling of biological and biophysical processes has gained
growing interest in the last decades in view of a variety of
applications. Mathematical models of biological and biophysical
processes are applied to phenomena on a microscopic as well as on
a macroscopic level. Important examples comprise enzymatic or genetic
regulation, transport phenomena in microbiology and the investigation
how viral diseases spread. Thereby, this scientific field has developed
into an active and inherently interdiciplinary field of reseach. The
seminar course will provide an introduction to the modelling and
analysis of biophysical processes on a theoretical level. Proposed
seminar topics are designed to be accessible by advanced students and
graduate students who are familiar with mathematical concepts of Linear
Algebra and Analysis, in particular techniques
to analyse ordinary and partial di erential equations. The seminar is
addressed to interested students of physics, applied mathematics,
computer science and biology.
Students may choose, for example, a topic from the following list:

  • membrane transport processes
  • enzyme kinetics
  • action potentials
  • biophysical neural networks
  • physiology of the heart
  • spreading of infecious diseases
  • virus dynamics
  • immune response to viral infections
  • tumor growth
  • biological pattern formation

The students are encouraged to contribute with their own ideas
and suggestions for the topic of their seminar presentation.
