Kaum ein mittelalterlicher Erzählstoff ist in der Gegenwartsliteratur so präsent wie die Abenteuer des Drachentöters Siegfried: seine Siege, seine Liebesgeschichte(n) wie auch sein grausamer Tod wurden und werden immer wieder neu erzählt. Und auch die Erzählungen seiner (angeheirateten) Familie, der Burgundenkönige und ihres Vasallen Hagen von Tronje, ihre Intrigen und ihr Untergang finden immer wieder Eingang in lyrische, epische oder dramatische Texte. Dass die Figuren und ihr Handeln dabei in den jeweiligen Werken sehr ambivalent bewertet werden, lässt sich v.a. auf ihre Instrumentalisierung für nationalistische Ideologien und Denkmuster erklären. Nach einer kurzen Einführung in das mittelalterliche Original wird der Fokus auf die Veränderungsprozesse gelegt, die der Stoff vor und nach der NS-Zeit durchlaufen hat.
