300423 Einführung in die internationalen Beziehungen II (Ü) (SoSe 2022)

Contents, comment

Competencies: The aim of this course is to familiarise students with the fundamental theories, processes and structures of international politics and world political research. By reading original texts as well as by dealing with concrete examples of international politics, the students should gain in-depth knowledge of the organisation and dynamics of international relations. As the course I provides the introduction to IR theoretical discussions, we strongly recommend that you only attend course II after having attended Introduction to International Relations Theory I.

Content of teaching: The introduction to international relations is organized in two consecutive semester courses. The first part dealt with the central concepts, actors and theories of international relations. The second part focuses on in-depth (theory-led) discussions of political processes and structures of international relations. In addition to further developments of classic theories of international relations, students will also discuss new theoretical approaches and the history of international relations since the early 19th century. Finally, based on theory, students will see an overview of selected central problem areas in international relations.

Studienleistung: Students are required to attend sessions and read the respective assigned literature previously. They will work in small groups (2-4 students) in the week before each session, discussing the ‘week questions’ proposed by the lecturer. The summary of these reflections (500-1000 words) should be uploaded to Lernraum the day before the session. At the session, they will share their reflections with the whole group. All sessions will be exclusively in English.

Prüfungsleistung: The examination for module 30-M14 (International Relations) is a term paper (approx. 4,000 words including references and footnotes). The term paper must be submitted by 16th September 2022 (15 days before the end of the Summer Semester).
