Der Staat ist eine grundsätzliche Bedingung des Lebens in entwickelten Gesellschaften, wie wir es kennen. In diesem Seminar fragen wir, was einen Staat eigentlich ausmacht, in welchen historischen Prozessen Staaten entstanden sind und was passiert, wenn (wie in manchen Regionen der Dritten Welt) ein Staat nicht oder kaum existent ist. Wichtige Begriffe und Themenfelder, die behandelt werden, sind etwa: Gewaltmonopol, Verwaltung, Nationenbildung, Staatsbürgerschaft, Staat in der internationalen Ordnung, schwache/gescheiterte Staaten.
