Stalnaker untersucht in „Inquiry“ den Prozess des Formens, Testens und Veränderns unserer Überzeugungen („beliefs“). Dabei geht er Fragen aus Metaphysik, Sprachphilosophie, Erkenntnistheorie und Philosophie des Geistes nach, z.B. welche Rolle spielen Sprache und Kontrafaktizität für unsere Überzeugungen? Was ist die Natur möglicher Welten und kontrafaktischer Aussagen? Und schließlich, was ist das Verhältnis zwischen unseren bestehenden Überzeugungen und dem Mechanismus unsere Überzeugungen im Lichte neuer Informationen zu revidieren?
In diesem Lektüreseminar werden wir Stalnakers „Inquiry“ gemeinsam in Gänze lesen, kritisch diskutieren und prüfen, ob er zufriedenstellende Antworten auf diese Fragen gibt. Das Seminar findet online via Zoom statt. Die Zugangsdaten werden zeitnah zur ersten Sitzung bekannt gegeben. Der genaue Ablauf des Seminars wird in der ersten Sitzung besprochen. Der Text des Seminars ist nur auf englisch verfügbar, aber wir werden ihn in einer angemessenen Geschwindigkeit lesen und es werden neben dem Grundstudium keine weiteren Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt.
