Die Veranstaltung beginnt mit einer Einführung in die migrationspädagogische Perspektive (Paul Mecheril et al., 2010). Eine Auswahl klassischer Identitätstheorien wird vorgestellt (Erikson, Krappmann, Mead, Goffman, Habermas) und auf Jugendliche mit Migrationshintergrund angewandt. Im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung stehen Identitätsbildungsprozesse im Zusammenhang mit Mehrfachzugehörigkeit („Prekäre Verhältnisse“, Mecheril, 2003). Das Ziel des Seminars ist es, die Perspektive von Hybridisierungsprozessen und ihre Widersprüche und Vorteile zu illustrieren (z.B. „Neuer Weltbürger“, P. Zachary 2000).
