Die politische Philosophie untersucht die Natur des Politischen und fragt nach Legitimation politischer Institutionen. Die Definitionen dessen, was zum Wesen der Politik gehört, und ihre Zielsetzungen fallen sehr unterschiedlich aus. Während zum Beispiel für Platon und Aristoteles die Politik eng mit der Ethik verzahnt ist, weil das höchste Glück für den einzelnen und das Gemeinwesen zusammenfallen, hat die Politik bei Machiavelli primär die Aufrechterhaltung der Herrschaft und des Staates und bei Hobbes die Sicherheit der Bürger zum Ziel. Im Seminar werden wichtige Texte der politischen Philosophie gelesen. Grundbegriffe und Grundfragen wie: Auffassungen von Politik; Macht, Herrschaft, Gesellschaftsvertrag; politische Gerechtigkeit, Demokratie und Grenzen der Politik werden analysiert und diskutiert.
