Contents, comment

Pragmatism is a philosophical movement that began in America in the 1870s. The views of pragmatist philosophers differ widely, but at their core is the idea that the meaning of a statement depends upon its practical consequences. Pragmatists put this idea to use in a variety of ways, perhaps most notoriously in challenging the idea that truth is a matter of correspondence with reality. In this course we will explore pragmatist views in a range of important areas, including meaning, truth, metaphysics, epistemology, scientific knowledge and religious belief. The course will focus on classic texts by Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and John Dewey.
