Drawing upon the tenets of literary and cultural studies, Verbs of Empire delves into a conversation on the ways language has been at the service of the historical debates and discourses spun around the US Empire, both before and after the turn of the 20th century. A central point of interest for us will be to study the intimate -- often violent and violating -- exchanges between language (negotiation, expression, communication, silencing, broadcasting, opposing and defending, etc.) and power as the United States evolved out of, identified as, opposed, and returned to 'empire.'
