In this seminar, we will be examining written texts by authors who make use of Pidgin (also known as Hawai'i Creole English) to tell their stories. To that end, we will first explore the language variety in its lexis and syntax, considering the language contact situation on the islands during the genesis phase of the language. From there, we shall move on to close readings of Pidgin texts to get a feel for the people, the language, the literature and the culture of Hawai'i.
It is strongly recommended to have completed BM3 and either PM2 or PM3 courses before attending this seminar.
