230271 Feminist Writings and Criticism for Beginners (S) (WiSe 2020/2021)

Contents, comment

US-American literary production has a long and rich history of feminst writings, writings by women writers that have contributed to women's rights with fictional and non-fictional texts. For the longest time, this intellectual movement was dominated by white women, the voices of non-white women silenced by unequal power distribution in education and the literary market.
In this class we will seek to create a deeper understanding of Feminist Criticism as a practice of literary analysis. We will recognize histories, achievements, important voices and texts as well as the ongoing need for diversity and plurality in feminist writings and criticism. We will begin with an overview of theories, terms, and concepts and move on to close-reading a selection of literary texts.
