This course will either take place as a regular seminar (every second Fr, 12-14) or as an online course in case of continued distance learning.
This seminar prepares for and accompanies the 'Berufsfeldbezogene Praxisstudie' (BPSt) in the course of your English studies. It can only be taken in the context of the BPSt and is obligatory for this practical. The course preparatory/accompanying seminar aims to provide you with the basics you need to support your groups of pupils: diagnostic testing, basics of lesson planning, material design, classroom management and differentiation, providing feedback, … At the end of the semester, you will be expected to hand in a final report, usually a case study on the project work.
In English, the BPSt normally involves a cooperation project with different schools. The seminar prepares for a placement at these schools, which will take place once a week during the term (starting week 2 or 3). In the school placement, you will be supervising small groups of pupils in the form of project work. Depending on the group of pupils, this can involve helping students with special needs, low L2 proficiency, but also challenging projects for stronger students (e.g. theatre, radio play production). In case of continued distance learning you will nevertheless work on didactic projects and/or support teachers in their distance teaching. There will be an obligatory two-day block seminar at the beginning of term to prepare you for your tasks, either in person at university or via Zoom.
In a nutshell:
- two-day obligatory block seminar at the beginning of term as a preparation BEFORE the practical
- weekly course at a partner school in Bielefeld AFTER the preparatory seminars (if possible)
- regular seminars or video conferences (every other week) accompanying the practical
- a practice-oriented sessions with a school teacher (e.g. to discuss 'everyday problems') (if possible)
- final report
As an alternative to this course, English students can also do their BPSt in the 'FörBi' programme. In the FörBi course, the focus is on school students for whom English is an L3, not an L2.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
