Die Vorlesung bietet eine Einführung in die neurowissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der Sinneswahrnehmung und der Kognition des Menschen. Neben anatomischen Grundlagen zur Struktur von Nervenzellen, Nervenzellverbänden und größeren Funktionseinheiten werden auch die physiologischen Abläufe der Funktion dieser Einheiten vorgestellt. Um kognitive Prozesse in ihrem physiologischen Rahmen verstehen zu können, soll den Studierenden der gedankliche Brückenschlag zwischen neurophysiologisch-anatomischen Fakten auf zellulärer Ebene und der eher ganzheitlich orientierten sprachwissenschaftlichen Sichtweise auf Kognition und Sprache ermöglicht werden. Neben einem Verständnis der neurophysiologischen Vorgänge bei einer Aphasie soll die Vorlesung auch wesentliche Grundlagen für ein Verständnis anderer neuropsychologischer Störungen (z.B. Neglekt, Agnosie, Blindsight) liefern.
