Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, den Studierenden ein Verständnis für die gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen von Gesundheit und Krankheit zu vermitteln. Hierfür wesentliche sozialwissenschaftliche Begriffe, Modelle und Theorien werden vorgestellt und in ihrer Bedeutung für die Untersuchung und Beeinflussung gesundheitsrelevanter Lebensbedingungen und Verhaltensweisen diskutiert. Näher befassen wird sich die Veranstaltung etwa mit Konzepten zur Analyse der Sozialstruktur (z.B. Schicht, Milieu) und des gesellschaftlichen Wandels (z.B. Modernisierung, Individualisierung). Vor diesem Hintergrund wird der Stellenwert von Bildung, sozialer Sicherung und gesundheitlicher Versorgung herausgearbeitet. Die Frage, welchen Veränderungen diese Bereiche im Zuge des gesellschaftlichen Wandels unterliegen und welche Anforderungen sich daraus für die Gesundheitssystemgestaltung ergeben, bildet einen Schwerpunkt der Veranstaltung.
Voraussetzung für den angestrebten Wissens- und Kompetenzerwerb ist die regelmäßige, aktive Teilnahme an der Veranstaltung. Die Prüfungsleistung wird in Form einer Klausur erbracht.
