Die Systemtheorie, wie sie vor allem von Niklas Luhmann entwickelt wurde, bricht bekanntermaßen mit vielen Begrifflichkeiten und Überzeugungen soziologischen Denkens. Dies trifft auch auf die Überlegungen Luhmanns zu den modernen Massenmedien zu. Zum einen werden diese vom Image einer abzulehnenden, da zwangsläufig auf die Gesellschaft nur repressiv einwirkenden Einrichtung befreit; zum anderen wird ihnen – wie den technischen Verbreitungsmedien insgesamt – ein systematischer Platz in der Theorie der Gesellschaft eingeräumt. Um diese „Kehrtwende“ in der Behandlung der Massenmedien besser zu verstehen, wird in dem Seminar das Buch „Die Realität der Massenmedien“ ausgehend von zuvor entwickelten Fragestellungen gelesen und besprochen.
