300029 Power in Global Governance (in English) (Ü) (SoSe 2012)

Studying global governance usually implies an appreciation of the myriad of actors that coordinate and compete in contemporary global affairs including states, inter-governmental organizations, NGOs, civil society movements as well as private organizations, epistemic communities and other forms of private authority. Less investigated is the notion of power and how it applies to or is used by this plurality of actors. This tutorial will address the topic of global governance through the lens of power. Of central interest will be how power functions in such a system and what different concepts of power we can detect from different theoretical readings of contemporary politics. What exactly do we mean by power? How does it function or operate? How do certain actors come to gain and lose power? The course will be centred on readings, with sessions consisting of questions and discussions, both in groups and as an open forum.
