996007 Academic English: Oral Presentations (S) (WiSe 2010/2011)

Contents, comment

This workshop is meant for PhD students of the BGHS who are planning to present a poster or give a talk or presentation in the near future, e.g. presenting their PhD project to a Bielefeld audience, their supervisor, the Annual Seminar in early 2011, or any other (inter)national meeting or conference.
The point of the workshop is to give you a chance to practice both making a presentation and speaking English in a friendly, non-threatening environment. There will be a question-and-answer session after each presentation on Saturday so that you get more skilled in academic discussion in English. And you can brush up your spoken English in informal situations as well – especially over a drink/coffee, and a joint meal on Saturday.
You will have two chances to practice presenting in English.
On Friday, you will give the first 5 to 6 minutes of your talk/presentation, which will be followed by an extensive feedback session that will focus both on your delivery and your English. This will give you the chance to change and improve your performance where that should be necessary.
On Saturday, you will make a complete presentation (between 15 and 20 minutes max), for which we will have chairpersons to lead the sessions; there will also be question and answer sessions, and of course feedback from the course leader.
