Im Seminar soll das Buch
Milnor: Singular Points of Complex Hypersurfaces
besprochen werden. Bei Interesse und Bedarf können einzelne Vorträge den thematischen Hintergrund für Bachelorarbeiten bilden.

Zur Einordnung des Buches: Anfang der 1960er Jahre hatte John Milnor zusammen mit Michael Kervaire in Aufsehen erregenden Arbeiten gezeigt, dass die 7-dimensionale Sphäre als topologische Mannigfaltigkeit mit 28 verschiedenen differenzierbaren Strukturen versehen werden kann. Noch größer war die Überraschung, als Brieskorn die abstrakt konstruierten exotischen Strukturen konkret machen konnte, nämlich als Link von Singularitäten völlig harmlos aussehender komplexer Polynome.
Das Buch bietet eine Einführung in ein mathematisches Gebiet, in dem sich Methoden aus komplexer Geometrie, Analysis, Algebra und Topologie in harmonischer Weise ergänzen.
