„The Environment and Animals. New Perspectives on the European Expansion“
Globalisation, European expansion, and global entanglement – these terms and concepts are present in the last years or even decades among scholars. This processes and phenomena were mostly discussed in a rather classic conceptual framing – that is social, economic and political history - for quite some time; in recent years, new approaches like animal and environmental history assume more and more importance. In this course, the debates between the different approaches and the discussion about their relevance and impact will be in some way re-enacted, being co-taught by Jon Coleman (Notre Dame/USA), an expert in animal and environmental history and Antje Flüchter, a scholar of early modern entanglement and expansion from a cultural and social perspective.
The first part of the course will be taught by Antje Flüchter in a two week cycle introducing models and concepts regarding the European expansion such as migration, entanglement, transculturality, discussing actors, factors as well as problems of these approaches. The second part will be taught on 3 days en bloc of week 28. We will introduce concepts of animal and environmental history. Theory reading will include Donna Haraway, Companion Species Manifesto. We will inquire about the role environmental factors like disease, domestic animals, and aggressive vegetation (weeds) played in the European expansion.
