Today, English is one of the two official languages in Ireland and is spoken as the first language of most Irish people. But the spread of English in Ireland has not been as straightforward and fast as one might think.
In this seminar we are going to look at some of the unique features of Irish English - the similarities and differences between Irish English and Standard British English, as well as its regional variations, historical development and social implications. We are going to talk about the influence of Celtic on the English language and address questions of language, identity and politics in Ireland.
