This master class introduces students to key paradigms of contemporary American Studies. These paradigms address issues of cultural contact zones, border studies, mobility studies, and cultural and identity studies including race and gender. Students will read key texts from transcultural, transatlantic, and transnational American Studies . Each theoretical text will be presented and discussed in class. Examples from cultural production (literary texts, music, film, video etc.) serve as testing ground how to apply theory to text and case study. The class serves as a preparation for American Studies research and investigation. Likewise it prepares students to apply American Studies paradigms critically and efficiently.
