Die Grundlagen der Biotechnologie werden vermittelt. Im ersten Semester wird mit einer allgemeinen Einführung in biochemische Grundlagen und die Kultivierung von Mikroorganismen begonnen. Danach wird auf der Grundlage der Zellbiologie die Anwendung pflanzlicher und tierischer Zellkulturen besprochen.
Die Veranstaltung ist durchgehend produktorientiert, um zu zeigen, in welchen Feldern die Biotechnologie heute zur Anwendung kommt.
