Dem 18. Jahrhundert sagt man die Entdeckung von Individualität und Subjektivität nach. Dabei spielt die Beobachtung und Beschreibung des eigenen Lebens eine zentrale Rolle. An ausgewählten Textbeispielen soll die Entwicklung der Autobiographie behandelt werden. Es werden nicht nur die charakteristischen Merkmale dieser Textsorte und ihrer Erzählverfahren vorgestellt, sondern es ergeben sich damit auch konkrete Einblicke in z.T. abenteuerliche Lebensläufe sowie in die sozialen und kulturellen Verhältnisse Deutschlands zwischen Aufklärung und Romantik.
