Die französische Tragödie versteht sich als eine neue Form ihrer antiken Vorlage. Explizit wird dieser ambivalente Bezug in der sogenannten "Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes". Wir werden uns die Argumente dieser Auseinandersetzung in den theoretischen Texten von Boileau und Corneille ansehen und im Dialog mit ausgewählten Tragödien von Racine und Corneille zu bestimmen versuchen, inwiefern das Tragische im Zusammenhang des Christentums seine Gestalt verändert hat.
