In this course we will explore Queer Theory in a theoretical and in a practical way. In the theoretical part we will discuss contemporary texts of queer studies. The emphasis will not lie on the „classics“ (e.g. Butler, Foucault), but on current critical work, that uses these thinkers as jumping-off points and think further from there. We will discuss the key issues, questions and debates of Queer of color critique, trans studies, disability studies and Indigenous studies. In the practical part of the course we will work on small projects to support Edmonton-based queer community organizations (e.g. two-spirit organizations, LGBTQIA+ organizations). Both parts of the course will be done partly in collaboration with students and a professor from the University of Alberta, Canada. Meetings with them will take place online via Zoom which allows us to engage in international discussions and make international contacts.
The literature and the discussions will be in English. Nevertheless, students who do not speak (academic) English frequently are encouraged to participate in this course and to use it as an opportunity to practice discussing academic topics in English.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
