We will discuss how sociolinguistic variation relates to spoken language data, focussing largely on phonetics and phonology. There will be plenty of room for practical work in this class: You will record your own sample data and analyse this with acoustic phonetic methods, and we will also use existing corpora.
It is assumed that students have at least a basic understanding of phonetics and phonology. Please read the phonetics and phonology section from a recent "Introduction to Linguistics" textbook before the first session to make sure of this.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
