Die Phonetik und Phonologie beschäftigt sich mit der Beschreibung und Modellierung lautsprachlicher Phänomene und ihrer linguistischen Funktion. Zu diesem Zweck ist es notwendig, sich mit der Wahrnehmung, der Produktion (Aussprache) sowie akustischen Erscheinungsformen von Lauten zu beschäftigen. Zudem wird eine Einführung in die symbolische Beschreibung von lautsprachlichen Phänomenen gegeben. Es wird eine theoretische Einführung in die zentralen Teilgebiete der Phonetik sowie einiger grundlegender phonologischer Beschreibungsformalismen und Theorien gegeben. Als Ergänzung zur Vorlesung wird ein freiwilliges Tutorium angeboten, in welchem die Lehrinhalte anhand praktischer Übungen vertieft werden.

- Artikulatorische Phonetik
- Deskriptive Phonetik
- Perzeptive Phonetik
- Prosodie
- Phonologische Prozesse
- Phonotaktik
- Distinktive Merkmale
- Generative Phonologie (linear und "nichtlinear")
- Optimalitätstheorie
