Die Geschichte der UdSSR wird in der Regel im Kontrast zum beziehungsweise, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, als Konflikt mit dem „Westen“ geschrieben. Sowohl die innere Heterogenität der Sowjetunion als auch ihr Engagement in anderen Weltteilen fanden lange Zeit kaum Beachtung. In dem Seminar geht es sowohl um die asiatischen Sowjetrepubliken als auch um die wechselhaften Beziehungen etwa zu China und Japan.
