Das Seminar befasst sich mit der Entwicklung des Konsums seit 1945 in der späteren Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der DDR. Anhand von exemplarischen Sektoren des Konsums soll nicht nur der Frage des Systemvergleichs nachgegangen werden, sondern auch dem Problem, wie man das Phänomen der Massenkonsumgesellschaft konzeptionell fassen sollte, was sie ausmacht und ob und inwieweit sie sich in beiden deutschen Staaten im Untersuchungszeitraum ausbreiten konnte.

Die regelmäßige und vor allem aktive Teilnahme besteht in der Bereitschaft, gemeinsam Texte zu lesen und zu diskutieren und in kurzen Präsentationen wichtige Publikationen zur Nachkriegskonsumgeschichte dem Seminarplenum vorzustellen.
Weiterhin ist die Ausarbeitung einer Hausarbeit zu frei wählbaren Teilthemen Bedingung für den Erwerb von Leistungspunkten.
