Das mittelalterliche Königtum zeichnete sich im Besonderen durch ein Nahverhältnis des Königs zu Gott aus, welches Rückwirkungen auf die Herrschaftsübernahme, Herrschaftslegitimation und Herrschaftspraxis hatte. Das Handeln des Herrschers – angefangen von der Krönung, über die Herrschaftsausübung bis hin zum Begräbnis – war dabei von symbolischer Fülle gekennzeichnet.

In der Lehrveranstaltung sollen die verschiedenen Dimensionen hochmittelalterlicher Königsherrschaft näher betrachtet werden, im Zentrum stehen dabei die Geschlechter der Ottonen, Salier und Staufer. Dabei wird der Frage nachgegangen, in welchem Verhältnis Symbol und Sakralität jeweils zueinander standen und sich gegenseitig bedingten.
