Die Rahmenbedingungen des dokumentarischen Films haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten drastisch verändert: sowohl die strukturellen Veränderungen in der Rundfunklandschaft als auch die technischen Entwicklungen im Bereich digitaler Medien beeinflussen die Art und Weise, wie dokumentarisch gefilmt wird.
Neben einem Überblick über die sich verändernden Produktionsbedingungen werden dazu vor allem neuere soziologische Texte herangezogen, die sich mit diesen Entwicklungen aus wissenschaftlicher Perspektive auseinandersetzen. Das Seminar schließt damit an ein Einführungsseminar zum Dokumentarfilm im vergangenen Wintersemester an; die Teilnahme am vorangegangenen Seminar ist jedoch weder inhaltlich noch formal Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme am aktuellen Seminar.

Voraussetzung für eine erfolgreiche Teilnahme am Seminar, ist die Bereitschaft, theoretische Texte zu lesen und sich – auch außerhalb des zeitlichen Rahmens des Seminars – mit dokumentarischen Filmen zu beschäftigen.
