International migration has become a major factor in contemporary global change. Today, more and more countries experience emigration as well as immigration while some countries have become lands of transit migration. The volume of international migration is growing in all major regions. In addition to the enduring migratory patterns, new flows and forms of migration are developing in response to economic, political and cultural change and violent conflicts. Economic deprivation, dislocation by war, persecution or ecological catastrophes challenges the authority of national governments. Governments and European political institutions recognize the importance of international migration and the promotion of migrants' participation in civil societies has been formulated as a policy-aim.
Accordingly, this reading course aims at studying the dynamic and changing character of migration patterns and addressing major themes of current migration studies. Particularly, it focuses on migration patterns across time and space, theories of migration research, states' quest for control and policies aiming at preventing or restricting migrant settlement, incorporation and political participation of immigrants in civil societies, discrimination, labour market- and residential segregation of migrants, and the impact of international migration on security.
Diese Lehrveranstaltung richtet sich an MA- und PhD-Studierende.
