230509 Grammar and Usage (S) (SoSe 2019)

Inhalt, Kommentar

This seminar focuses on those areas of English grammar and usage that present particular challenges to (already proficient) users of English as a foreign language; its main purpose is to make sure that you have the ability to use grammatical structures, collocations and idiomatic formulations appropriately and correctly in a variety of contexts, with particular attention being paid to the kind of language appropriate to an academic register.

Apart from increasing your own mastery, you will, it is hoped, also pick up ideas for effective grammar instruction (which is useful even for those who are not planning to become teachers).

These are NOT coursebooks for the seminar, but highly recommendable resources for self study:
Hewings, Martin. (2013). /Advanced grammar in use/ (3rd ed.). Cambridge: Cambridge Univ. Press. (Self-study book with answers.)
Swan, Michael. (2017). /Practical English usage /(4th ed.) . Oxford: Oxford Univ. Press. (Reference book.)

Konkretisierung der Anforderungen

Given the limited time available, we can barely scratch the surface in class; participants need to study independently and look for additional material online if they have individual areas of weakness.
At least 70% of the classroom activities and homework tasks need to be completed to earn credit for this course.
There is one Module Examination for all the Language Practice courses. (Basismodul 1).
