230833 Global Simulation: Sociology (level B1+) (S) (WiSe 2009/2010)

Contents, comment

This mixed format course introduces typical language products of sociology. Students develop a concept for a "pressure group" of their choice. Students will complete activities to develop their pressure group's social role and decide how it will function. Activities will begin in class but will be completed at home. The course will use resources from academic works, print and broadcast media. In-class time will focus on negotiation of content, task assignment and review of results.

Learning objectives

  • understand in which social spheres sociologists commonly communicate.
  • learn reading methods for finding texts and deciding if they support research
  • gain familiarity with language signposts and other tips to improve oral presentations.
  • learn strategies for organising thoughts to make writing easier.
  • be introduced to a typical research reporting format.
