In this study group we will dive deep into H. P. Lovecraft’s works and find out what makes them so frightening and what techniques are used by him to make the reader shiver. Lovecraft is without a doubt one of the most influential authors for the modern horror genre. But why? In this study group we'll read and analyse Lovecraft while simultaneously taking a deep look into what Lovecraft’s philosophy was and how he shows this in his texts. We will read a few selected stories and discuss them in our group to understand what Lovecraftian Horror is and why it still is so present in today’s pop-culture.
Students doing Internationalisation at Home can earn three credit points for participating actively in the Study Group. Naturally, students who do not need credit for Int@Home can also attend simply from personal interest.
Please note that Study Groups are organised entirely by students with students for students, and live from the active input of all participants.
Some suggested texts and topics to examine:
Call of Cthulhu: The story is a collection of tales, letters, and diary entries – why?
Whisperer in The Darkness: Why does the reader also feel the paranoia of Henry Akeley?
One of three stories1: What role does the human race play in Lovecraft’s fiction?
Lovecraft’s protagonists: Scholars. Why did he often choose scholars as protagonists?
