Das Seminar erschließt sich das Angebot an Ansätzen zur sozialen Bewegungsforschung und entwickelt daraus einen Fragen- und Kriterienkatalog, mit dessen Hilfe die Gruppe dann eine Bandbreite sozialer Bewegungen in der deutschen und transnationalen Geschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts vergleichend untersuchen und einordnen soll. Eine Grundfrage wird sein, ob und inwieweit ein Zusammenschluss vieler Menschen zu einem bestimmten Zweck als soziale Bewegung gewertet werden soll. Kandidaten für eine solche Analyse sind: die politische Arbeiterbewegung (19. Jh.), die Gewerkschaftsbewegung (19. Jh.), die englischen Suffragetten (frühes 20. Jh.), die Kommunisten (1920er Jahre), Anti-Saloon League und Ku Klux Klan (USA, 1900-1930), die Nationalsozialisten (bis 1933), die amerikanische Bürgerrechtsbewegung (1950er Jahre) und die Studentenbewegung.
