261038 Representation in Science and Art (S) (WiSe 2009/2010)

Contents, comment

Recent philosophy of science has seen a growing interest in the question of how scientific theories and models represent the world. Many attempts to answer this question have drawn parallels to representation in art, particularly depiction. This work raises a number of interesting issues. Do representations in art and science mirror the world or are they merely conventional symbols? Do science and art represent the world in the same way or are there fundamental differences between them? This course will address these issues by examining recent work on representation in the philosophy of science alongside both recent and classic texts in the philosophy of art.
