Intelligenz - oft synonym mit Begabung verwandt - war und ist seit fast einem Jahrhundert das am besten erforschte Konstrukt der Psychologie. In der Erziehungswissenschaft wurde es aus ideologischen Gründen von Pädagogen der Neuen Linken als das diskreditiert, "was die Bedürfnisse des monokapitalistischen Systems befriedigt" (Koneffke). An den Folgen - u. a. durch Tabuisierung - trägt die Schulpädagogik heute noch, vor allem an der milieutheoretisch einseitigen und gesellschaftskritisch parteilichen Sicht. Heinz Holling und Kollegen (2004) zeigen mit ihrer Schrift, dass dieser Irrweg zumindest in der Psychologie längst verlassen worden ist, dass Theorien, Diagnostik und Förderung wichtige Forschungs- und Anwendungsbereiche auch für die Schule sind. - Die Prüfungsordnung für Lehrämter in NRW folgt mit dem Teilgebiet B.3 dieser Sichtweise.
