230314 Linguistic Theory: Creativity with Words (S) (SoSe 2005)

Short comment

Contents, comment

Creativity with words has many guises. Entirely new word forms and meanings can be invented for advertising or technical terminology. Existing words can be used in new ways, either with slow changes in word meaning over time, fashionable words which have a function of jargon, or in metaphorical and other figurative contexts, either in everyday language or in literature.

The course will start with an investigation of the basic ways in which words can be constructed (word formation, morphology), and proceed to different aspects of word meanings and the use of words in different contexts.

The topics dealt with in the course will have a theoretical foundation, but a strong emphasis will be put on practical issues connected vocabulary, vocabulary extension and vocabulary learning, including the acquisition of vocabulary by children. A reading list will be provided before the beginning of term (check my website below).

Credit points will be given according to the usual criteria (1: attendance; 2: active participation (including regular exercises or mid-term test, and portfolio compilation); 3: portfolio based end of term test. Those who wish to write a term-paper for additional credits can do so. Students who attend this class should have completed at least BM1, BM2, BM4 and BM5.
