In dem Kurs wird die Entwicklung kultureller Formen des Regionalismus von der Heimatkunstbewegung über die Blut- und Bodenideologie bis zu den Konzepten der Wiedergewinnung von Heimat in den 50er Jahren, der Kritik an Heimatkonzepten der 70er Jahre und den sozialhistorischen Heimatdefinitionen der Gegenwart behandelt. Zentral untersuchte symbolische Formen sind Literatur, Film, Musik, Mode und Brauchtum; die Entwicklungen werden parallel für die BRD, DDR, Österreich und die Schweiz verfolgt.
