Das Seminar wird die pädagogische und theologische Verantwortung des Religionsunterrichts in der Schule im Gesamtzusammenhang des Bildungsauftrags der Kirche bedenken. Dazu werden rechtliche Grundlagen des Religionsunterrichts und die politisch-gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen in Deutschland erläutert. Wichtige religionspädagogische Konzeptionen werden referiert und im Hinblick auf mögliche Praxisbedeutung für gegenwärtigen Unterricht geprüft. Die den Religionsunterricht bestimmenden Bezugsgrößen der Schülerinnen und Schüler, der Lehrerinnen und Lehrer und der Inhalte werden jeweils für sich und im systematischen Zusammenhang dargestellt.
Mögliche Ziele des Religionsunterrichts werden aus der Zuordnung der genannten Bezugsgrößen entwickelt. Schließlich wird auf mögliche Unterrichtsmethoden hingewiesen und nach deren Bedeutung für das Gesamtgeschehen des Unterrichts gefragt.
