Pronunciation is the most conspicous area of use in any language, and particularly in foreign languages. This class will examine the following questions, in particular the factors which affect foreign language pronunciation, such as the following:

  • types of language contact situation,
  • sociolinguistic factors in language contact,
  • errors and 'the lingua franca core' of English
  • sociolinguistic factors in pronunciation,
  • pronunciation and dialogue: intonation and turn-taking; focussing,
  • pronunciation and grammar: intonation and word structure,
  • pronunciation and speech sounds: rhythm, timing, phonetic detail,
  • practical analysis of pronunciation by ear and by computer.
