230204 Contemporary Literature of the American Southwest (S) (WiSe 2004/2005)

Short comment

Contents, comment

Participants are asked to read Almanac of the Dead before classes begin, due to the extraordinary length of the text, and in order to get a first impression of the central issues in contemporary Southwestern fiction. Social empowerment, land ownership, the re-writing of history, the impact of an intercultural, heterotopian social environment, and utopian or dystopian outlines of the future are some of the topics we will examine in the three novels, which all participants are required to buy and read. Additional shorter texts will be made available in form of a reader.

Required texts:

Leslie Marmon Silko, Almanac of the Dead. Penguin, 1992.
ISBN 0140173196.

Alejandro Morales, The Rag Doll Plagues. Arte Público Press, 1994.
ISBN: 1558851046

Cormac McCarthy, Cities of the Plain. Picador, 1998.
