Die Veranstaltung dient dem allgemeinen Überblick über die Geschichte der europäischen Kunst vom Mittelalter bis heute. Der Diskurs stützt sich auf die Vorstellung ausgewählter Werke der Malerei, Graphik, Skulptur und Architektur, die zu den bedeutendsten Werken der Kunstgeschichte gerechnet werden.
Ziel ist zum einen, ein Repertoire wichtiger Meisterwerke zu erarbeiten, und zum anderen, exemplarisch die jeweiligen Stilmerkmale der unterschiedlichen Kunstepochen herauszustellen. Auf diese Weise werden elementare Grundlagen vermittelt, anhand derer eine grobe stilistische Einordnung auch zuvor unbekannter, aber "typischer" Werke ermöglicht werden soll.
